Deffinition LCD TV - Basic TECHNICAL TRAINING MODULE Lesson 2

Saturday, December 6, 2014

LCD is short for liquid-crystal display. A low-power, flat-panel display used in many digital devices to display numbers or images. Liquid crystals (LCs) are matter in a state that has properties between those of conventional liquid and those of solid crystal.

It will appear as transparent liquid state when being heated, and as turbid solid state of crystalline particles when being cooled down.

CLASSIFICATION OF LCD TV ACCORDING TO ITS BACKLIGHT

Cold Cathode

Cold-cathode lamps include cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) and neon lamps.

LED

LED is short for Light-Emitting Diode.
An electronic semiconductor device that emits light when an electric current passes through it.

COLD-CATHODE LAMPS ( LCD TV)

According To The Type Of Cold-cathode Lamp

Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL)

External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp (EEFL)

LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED TV)
Type of Backlight
1. White LED-backlit LCD TV

2. RGB LED-backlit LCD TV

Arrangement of Backlight

Edge Backlighting

Advantages:
  1. The 5 basic advantages of LED TV
  2. The Edge Lighting LED TV is slimmer than D-LED TV.
Disadvantages:
  1.  The black levels are not that deep and the edge area of the screen and has a propensity to be brighter than the center area.
  2. Cannot locally dim a segment where it is needed.
  3. If you look well, you will see that there is some light leakage at the sides of the display where the LED's are located.

Full-Array or Direct LED TV (D-LED)

Advantages:
  1. The 5 basic advantages of LED TV.
  2. Lesser power consumption.
  3. Higher Contrast Ratio.
  4. Local Dimming is possible.
  5. Unsusceptible for screen burn-in.
Disadvantage:
  1. Relatively heavier and thicker than Edge Lighting LED TV .
  2. Local dimming means that each LED or a specific group of LEDs can be turned on and off independently within certain areas of the screen, thus providing more control of the brightness and darkness for each those areas, depending on the source material being displayed.

BASED ON SIGNAL

TV Signal Transmission Process
Image Transmission
The luminance and chroma of pixel transmitted in the original sender transforms into corresponding electronic signal with certain order.

By signal channel transmission, the receiving end will transform it into corresponding light-spot of the same luminance and chroma, and restore it into image in TV.

Analog TV Signal Formats
Different countries(areas) use different analog TV signal systems.
PALPAL D/K, PAL I, PAL B/G625/50i
China, Vietnam: PAL D/K
Britain, HK: PAL I
Germany, Australia, Southeast Asia countries: PAL B/G

Europe: DVB
According to the transmission medium:
•DVB-S (Satellite)
•DVB-C (Cable)
•DVB-T (Terrestrial)
America:

Broadcasting-Terrestrial Standard:       ATSC
Satellite/cable adopts European standard:    DVB-S/DVB-C
Japan:
Broadcasting-Terrestrial Standard:     ISDB-T
Satellite/cable adopts European standard:     DVB-S/DVB-C

Based on Principle

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)

The Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) is a vacuum tube containing an electron gun (a source of electrons or electron emitter) and a fluorescent screen used to view images.

RP (Rear Projection) TV

RP (Rear Projection) TV uses a projector to create a small image or video from a video signal and magnify this image onto a view able screen.

The projectors can be divided into LCD projector DLP projector and CRT projector.

Plasma Display Panel

A device forming image by phosphor luminescence that injects mixed gas into two sheets of ultra-thin glass  and applies the voltage on it.

LCD TV

LCD is short for liquid-crystal display. A low-power, flat-panel display used in many digital devices to display numbers or images. Liquid crystals (LCs) are matter in a state that has properties between those of conventional liquid and those of solid crystal.
It will appear as transparent liquid state when being heated, and as turbid solid state of crystalline particles when being cooled down.

LCDs do not produce light of their own.

Instead, when electric current is passed through the material, the molecules of the "liquid crystal" twist so that they either reflect or transmit light from an external source.

TV to Extend its Service Life

Saturday, November 22, 2014

To ensure good, satisfactory and lasting operation of the TV, please observe the following maintenance and routine check procedures:

Maintenance of TV

  • Turn off your TV properly by pressing the power key instead of turning off using the remote control power key. This is to avoid a long standby mode for the TV.
  • Turn off the TV if you are experiencing power or voltage fluctuations, if it is not connected to an automatic voltage regulator or regulated power supply.
  • Avoid placing your TV in places where the unit can come in contact with any liquid. Do not place it in areas where people usually take a drink and possibly spill the liquid, or in places where there could be potential leak. Liquid that penetrates the TV can cause defects on the components inside the TV. It can also cause short-circuit of the board.
  • Do not place any candle on top of the TV in case of a power failure.
  • Do not attempt to clean or repair the circuit board if you are not an electrical or electronics professional.

Maintenance of Remote control

  • Always replace the batteries with new ones when the remote control stops functioning. Dead batteries left inside the remote control unit can cause corrosion of the circuit board.
  • Avoid getting the remote control unit wet or come in contact with any liquid.
  • Do not allow children to play with remote control unit as dropping of the remote control can cause damage to the board inside the unit.
  • Regularly clean the surface of your remote control with clean and dry cloth. Never use water, cleaning fluids, wax, or chemicals. Keeping dust off your TV will help extend its service life.
  • If the remote control unit becomes dusty, use soft cloth or cotton with neutral cleaning agent to remove the dust off. Leave it to dry in the air.

Maintenance of TV to Extend its Service Life Proper Use:

  • Keep the TV screen from direct sunlight. Exposure to direct sunlight for a long period during the day can affect the viewing condition of the TV. It can also cause the aging of LCD or LED panel which will eventually decrease the luminosity factor and cause a short life cycle.
  • Do not remove the back cabinet of your TV without any professional maintenance technician supervision. Do not touch the circuit components inside the TV in order to avoid accidents such as burns or electric shock. A high voltage and live backplane inside the TV. If some metal falls into the TV, call for assistance and ask professional technicians to remove the back cabinet to take the metal out. Keeping the metal inside the unit may cause short-circuit or burning of some components inside on the board.
  • Turn off TV if there is a thunderstorm. Equip the TV with a lightning rod if using an outdoor antenna. In the absence of lightning rod, unplug the power cord and outdoor antenna to avoid damages caused by a lightning strike.
  • Do not break or cut the power cord. Always check whether the power cord has been damaged. An exposed copper can be a safety hazard and the entire power cord must be replaced immediately.
  • Avoid electric shock and electrostatic induction – the antenna and AV terminal interface on the TV have induction current caused by return circuit on the baseboard. If you need to connect the terminals by yourself take caution not to do with wet hands or standing on the floor barefoot. Unplug the TV your television before connecting the terminals.

Proper Maintenance:

  • Avoid moving the TV frequently. The LCD/LED panel is the most important part so avoid hitting it with tough objects or cause severe shock to the unit. Never move the TV when it is plugged in. Unplug the TV and wait for a few minutes before moving the TV.

  • Always check the TV for heat dissipation while watching TV. Keep your TV away from heat sources or close to the wall. During winter, keep the TV away from heater vents or radiators.
  • Adjust the screen's brightness to moderate level or to the quality of the image.
  • Avoid frequent turning on and off of the TV. Every time the TV is turned on, the LCD/LED panel is impacted by high current surge. Also, the inductive and capacitive components on the circuit will be easily damaged due to the constant over-voltage and over-current.
  • Turn off the TV immediately if there is abnormal grating, smoke and burning smell coming out of the unit. Ask a professional service technician to check before turning it back on for safety reasons.
  • If moisture is observed on the TV, use the TV frequently because the heat produced by the running TV can disperse the moisture effectively.

LED TV Problem No Display but with Power

Friday, November 14, 2014

No Display but with Power is a common problem of LED LCD TV's of any brand including; Sony, Samsung, LG, Haier, Sanyo, Sharp, Skyworth, Hyundai, Changhong, TCL, Devant, Philips, Toshiba, Kollin, KO, Daewoo, Goldstar, Panasonic, JVC, SEM, Coocaa, Pensonic, Coby, Teac and many more.

TV has a power when turn on but display is blank. This scenario comes the same with this question.

"I just turn my tv on from standby mode and the standby light disappeared and the tv isn't giving any signs of life. I'm searching the internet for cases just like this and I read that is recommended to plug it out, wait and plug it back in again. This doesn't seem to do the trick. I'm getting a bit restless.
Its a Sharp LCD tv that I bought around 3 years ago. Haven't had any problems with it. Didn't even have to change the batteries in the remote control yet. Does anybody know anythings I can do? Maybe i'm not resetting it properly when I got it plugged out?"

Technically speaking this problem might be, Panel Problem, or Mainboard Problem, and or Back light problem.

Parts Diagnostic Problem.

First Scenario:
If slightly press the TV Display and sees white light appeared, the possible problem is your LED TV panel. Panel is un-repairable, replace the whole panel.

Second Scenario:
If slightly press the TV LED Display and see's no trace of light, possible problem is mainboard. In this case, just change the TV mainboard and turn on to enjoy your favorite TV Show again.

Third Scenario:
If slightly press the LED Display and see's no trace of light but when look closer, a very dim display reflection appers, posible problem is LED TV Backlight.
