Intel® Looking to Lead Wearable Tech

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Intel highlighted several products and initiatives at CES 2014 that are aimed at boosting wearable device innovation. Let’s take a look at what Intel has on the plate for wearable tech in 2014:

Intel® Edison—Powering Smart Devices

Intel® Edison is actually a computer housed in an SD card, with built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and flash storage. It’s powered by an Intel processor and microcontroller core, and will be the building block for waves of wearable tech in 2014. Rest Devices* was on hand, showing its Edison-powered smart baby onesie and smart bottle warmer.

Intel Smart Earbuds

Do you enjoy listening to music while you exercise? Wish you could shed the heart monitors, watches and smart phone apps that track your health? Intel will be powering smart stereo earbuds that provide biometric and fitness information—tracking heart rate and pulse while providing full stereo audio. The buds are even capable of automatically selecting music with a tempo that matches your target heart rate.

Collaborating With Partners, Encouraging New Innovators

In a move that puts it at the front of the pack, Intel will be collaborating with the Council of Fashion Designers of America* to create a space for fashionistas and tech heads to discuss wearable tech, while exploring and exchanging ideas. The collaboration will connect more than 400 leading fashion designers.

Intel is already working with Barneys* and Opening Ceremony* to develop a smart bracelet.

Intel also announced its global “Make It Wearable” challenge, which encourages creative types to design and develop new wearable tech. More than $1.3 million will be awarded to winners.
